| India 08 - History
When Murdoch Chiropractic Student, Brett Dellar, was looking to organize a project for fellow students to sharpen their clinical skills while providing health care to a community in need, he stumbled across the Seva Kendra Mission, along the riverbanks surrounding Siliguri, northern India. Together with Father James Gonsalves, the director of Seva Kendra who is working with local impoverished communities to improve their quality of life and give them better opportunities, Brett organized a crew of 28 Australians — comprising four doctors and 24 interns from Murdoch University in Perth — to run special chiropractic camps for these stone crushers. Over 400 people attended the camps, presenting with all sorts of ailments from cuts and bruises to fever and backache. The trip to India has been such a huge success that it is now in its 3rd year and will be underway for 25 students and 5 registered chiropractors this June. The students pay for their own airfare, as well as raise money to cover costs such as medical supplies and tables for treating patients. The also intend to donate funds to the Mission for future educational supplies and facilities in order to better the quality of life for the members of this community.
